The next crisis: Commercial real estate

WASHINGTON (CNNMoney.com) -- A congressional watchdog panel warned on Thursday that mounting commercial real estate losses could endanger the banking system and thwart economic recovery.
A total of $1.4 trillion in commercial real estate loans will require refinancing in the next four years, the Congressional Oversight Panel said in a report. More than half of those loans are underwater, written for properties whose value has dropped like a rock. Leer Mas en CNN


EU to support Greece amid crisis

(CNN) -- The European Union called on Greece Thursday to do whatever is necessary to reduce the country's skyrocketing budget deficit. The announcement by new EU President Herman Van Rompuy came at a meeting of European leaders in Brussels, Belgium.Van Rompuy did not announce a deal to rescue Greece but said European countries would be prepared to step in if needed. Goldman Sachs Tells Fed To Start With Rate Hikes

Most handicappers believe that when the Federal Reserve starts to tighten policy, it will begin by moving assets off its balance sheet and follow that with interest rate increases. Goldman Sachs‘ economists aren’t so sure after congressional testimony by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke this week. Greece's dysfunctional economy is now at the heart of a rescue effort that could be disastrous for the entire continent—and the rest of the world.
Plutus, the Greek god of wealth, did not have an easy life. As the myth goes, Plutus wanted to grant riches only to the "the just, the wise, the men of ordered life." Zeus blinded him out of jealousy of mankind (and envy of the good), leaving Plutus to indiscriminately distribute his favors. Clinton Visits Gulf Allies .

DOHA, Qatar—U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton began a visit to two Persian Gulf allies Sunday as part of a broader Obama administration effort to shore up support for taking a tougher stance against Iran's nuclear program [....] Mr. Feltman said the U.S. believes the two Gulf allies, as well as other countries in the region, can help "sharpen the question for Iran" as to whether it is better off continuing to seek higher-enriched uranium that is closer to weapons grade or halt the program."We would expect them (Gulf allies) to use their relationship in ways that can help increase the pressure that Iran feels," Mr. Feltman said. Leer mas en WSJ

El PIB ha rebotado por la inmensa cantidad de dinero que el Estado ha inyectado en la economía mediante rescates y ayudas de todo tipo. Esto ha motivado que las empresas repongan inventarios y, casi sólo con eso, se ha empujado el PIB cuatrimestral hasta una cifra anormalmente alta.Pero el PIB no deja de ser un agregado que mide el gasto, y, por lo tanto, es perfectamente alterable por el Estado si decide gastar más. Clinton amenaza a Irán con un "precio más alto"

La secretaria de Estado de EEUU amenaza a Irán con hacerle pagar un "precio más alto" por su carrera nuclear tras haber fracasado las negociaciones para enriquecer el uranio en el exterior. "No deja otra opción a la comunidad internacional más que endurecer las sanciones", dijo [....] El pasado día 11, el presidente iraní, Mahmud Ahmadineyad, anunció que su país ya había producido el primer paquete de uranio enriquecido al 20 por ciento. Además, la jefa de la diplomacia estadounidense agregó que el régimen de Teherán "ha rechazado demostrar a la comunidad internacional que su programa nuclear es con fines pacíficos". Leer Mas...

Canada looks to China to exploit oil sands rejected by US

Canada, faced with growing political pressure over the extraction of oil from its highly polluting tar sands, has begun courting China and other Asian countries to exploit the resource.The move comes as American firms are turning away from tar sands because of its heavy carbon footprint and damage to the landscape [....] The Pentagon is also scaling down its use of tar sands oil to meet a 2007 law requiring the US government to source fuels with lower greenhouse gas emissions.Major oil companies such as Shell are also coming under shareholder pressure to pull out of the Canadian projects.
